RemarkAble women crowned Saturday

La Crosse, WI, July 30th, 2018

Excitement, nervousness, and everything inbetween were felt at the Weber Center for the Performing Arts on Saturday, as ten women prepared for their day to shine, at the 2018 Miss RemarkAble pageant.

The ladies started their day at 8 a.m. sharp. The Salon Professional Academy and Sue Kolve's Salon and Spa prepared Saphra, Tracy, Brittany, Jenna, Shelby, Brandy, Camille, Amber, Terol and Lois by doing makeup and hair. Each woman had their hair and makeup done in a unique style, to fit their outfits of choice.

After they were all dolled up, they all headed over to the Weber Center.

After mingling and having lunch, the contestants were interviewed by the judges and went backstage to touch up their makeup and hair.

The room smelled heavily of makeup and hairspray, and the lights were hot, and so was the enthusiasm!

The contestants helped each other get ready, Miss Onalaska helped Brittany put her earrings in, therapeutic recreation intern Allison helped calm some contestant's nerves, shoes were swapped out, but soon, everyone was ready for rehersal on stage.

30 minutes before the show, all the contestants were heading to backstage. The women mingled, gave pep talks, and waited for the pageant to begin.

Each woman got to introduce herself and talk about her interests, and then were asked questions based on these interests. After, each woman's "Remarkable Me" videos were played and they were escorted on stage with a person of their choice.

Saphra is a very creative young woman who enjoys painting, drawing, and doing arts and crafts of all kinds in her spare time. Saphra's art work has been recognized at the state fair, the Pump house, and the La Crosse county fair. When Saphra is not behind a canvas or a piece of paper you can find her singing, fishing, or spending time with her grandpa and grandma.

Brittany is a dedicated Elvis fan who has attended the Elvis Explosion in La Crosse for 13 years! Besides being an Elivs fan, Brittany loves to sing karaoke, write in her journal, listen to music, shop, bowl and go to the library. She has an excellent memory, recalling names and details of past events with ease. Along with her great sense of humor, she loves word search puzzles.

Shelby is currently working at her dream job, for the La Crosse Loggers Baseball Association. While she isn't working, she loves dancing, crafts, photography, baking, and playing board games. She also helps fundraise for the Children's Miracle Network. Shelby also is a Sugar Creek Bible Camp representative, and volunteers at the Special Olympics, while also being a former athlete.

Amber loves to help others. She does this by babysitting her niece and nephew while her sister is working, helping her mom clean, being a Special Olympics coach, and working with other individuals with disabilities as an instructional aide. In her free time, she goes to the movies with her friends and spends time with her family.

Terol likes everything, but to narrow down to a few, she likes bowling, swimming, walking, riding horses, boat rides, and camping with her family. She rides horses through HorseSense and also helps keep the city parks clean through Aptiv. Terol smiles a lot, is very enthusiastic, dances and sings, and is a hard working person. She won the High Production Award in 2016 at Aptiv.

Tracy's dream job is to be a sign language interpreter and public speaker. She is into sports such as track, hockey, bocce ball, and bowling. She is involved with the Special Olympics. In her free time, Tracy enjoys bird watching, doing word searches, sign language, watching movies, baking, reading and using the computer.

Jenna loves photography, talking to friends, riding her bike, swimming, going to concerts, and being with family. She loves socializing with people, which is one reason why Jenna would love to be Miss RemarkAble 2018, in addition to trying a new adventure. She also babysits, and does walking and volleyball in her free time.

Camille wants to help promote Aptiv with local, state and federal politicans and create more exposure for people with disabilities in the community. For Camille, politics and current events are some of her interests. But she also loves baseball, hockey, and meeting international students on the bus. Camille lives on her own, which is something she is proud of, and her late father was a Wisconsin Native and Korean War Hero.

Brandy loves to bowl, bocce ball, swimming, arts and crafts, going to the spa and helping people. She also has been a Girl Scout for 20 years. She is learning how to train pet therapy dogs so she can go out into the community and provide therapy to others, and that is another love of hers, animal care.

Lois recently graduated from the C.O.R.E. program, and has been doing lots of volunteering this year. She has volunteered at the food drive, made blankets for the hospital, and helped hand out t-shirts for breast cancer awareness. She also rang bells at the Salvation Army and participated in the Down Syndrome Awareness Walk. Lois is funny, and makes friends easily. She loves making people smile.
