Aptiv promotes Spread The Word To End The Word

"The R-word hurts because it is exclusive. It's offensive. It's derogatory."

La Crosse, WI, February 28, 2018 – Spread The Word To End The Word is a campaign to eliminate the derogatory use of the r-word from everyday speech and promote the acceptance and inclusion of people with disabilities. This year, the annual day of awareness for Spread The Word is March 7th. Join Aptiv in ending the word by taking the pledge at https://www.r-word.org/. Aptiv will be in the community on March 7th, to promote awareness for Spread The Word and to encourage others to take the pledge.

This campaign began in 2009 and since then, over 700,000 people have taken the pledge to promote respect and end the use of the r-word. It began as a response to the Special Olympics athletes’ call for change after they expressed the pain that resulted from being referred to by the r-word. This word dehumanizes and devalues the community of individuals with disabilities. When it is used, it has a negative impact on a friend, neighbor, brother, sister, or co-worker..

Aptiv is dedicated to informing the community on the negative impact of the r-word and encourages individuals to use “people first” language which promotes the value and abilities of every individual. We encourage readers to take the pledge and help end the use of the r-word by educating others on the harmful effects this word has on individuals with disabilities. Remember this statement from the Spread The Word website, “language affects attitudes” and “attitudes impact actions.” Together, we can choose to create communities of acceptance and inclusion for people of all abilities.
